New release DVD

In the UK, the biggest gripe among DVD rental subscribers is the inability to get hold of the latest film, as everyone and their dog using the same service will likely be vying for the same title as it is released.

In all fairness to the rental sites, they cannot possibly purchase the same number of copies of each new film released to match the number of customers on their user bases (which for companies like Blockbuster and Lovefilm can be more than half a million active users at any one time).

It is immaterial whether you are a customer of a major or minor DVD rental site as the problem seems universal. Some DVD rental sites, however, do perform better in this regard than others.

A number of features should be considered when trying to decide which DVD rental site is superior to the others regarding new releases and those more popular films.

Does your DVD rental site have exclusivity deals with the studios?

An exclusivity deal means that a DVD rental site is given sole rights to a specific movie for a fixed time, usually a fixed number of weeks.

It is a good idea to remember that even though one DVD rental service may be in possession of a particularly popular movie a couple of weeks before the others, it is quite likely to attract a lot of attention from current subscribers and you may find that by the time your turn comes around the exclusivity deal has finished.

So while exclusivity deals will no doubt give you a head start in seeing some latest releases, it is not necessarily a panacea.

Does your DVD rental site think outside the box?

It is always useful for a DVD rental site to think laterally when trying to remain competitive and in front of the rest, and that’s certainly what some DVD rental sites have been doing.

For example, one high-street DVD rental company, which also has an online DVD rental service, has been trying out a new scheme whereby their customers are given a few credits each month with their online subscription that can be used at any high-street branch of their company.

This is great if your particular choice of movie is not available online exactly when you want it but can instead be picked up from your local video store.

How many copies of each title does your DVD rental site buy?

DVD rental sites are all a bit elusive about how many new releases they purchase. This is no doubt due to the fact that we’d all be horrified to know how few they actually buy to share out with their sometimes hundreds of thousands of customers!

One DVD rental site, which has a high street presence, maintains that after the first week they are able to significantly boost the number of newly released films available to their online customers by obtaining extra copies from their high street shops.

So, how does one choose?

There are a lot of things to take into consideration over which DVD rental service is going to offer the best choice of popular titles.

While we’ll never know the most important factor: i.e. how many copies of newly released titles do they purchase, taking into account the factors above should help you choose a relevant service.

After all, getting your hands on new releases is never going to be easy with any online DVD rental service, so it’s perhaps best to factor on everything else as well to ensure you get the best overall experience, make sure you read a good review too, for example the LoveFilm DVD rental review or Blockbuster DVD rental review.
