It’s cooler to be strong and independent. It’s okay not to have sex, it’s okay to get to know people. I’m celibate, celibacy’s fine.” If you can believe it, Gaga is joining the likes of the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus when it comes to being pro-abstinence. The latest Gaga project to cause a stir in the music industry was the music video she collaborated on with Beyonce. “Telephone” features the two pop stars in Thelma and Louise character roles, only there is a lot more skin showing in this short film. The costumes are as outrageous as they come – one scene shows Gaga with her hair piled high, molded into the shape of a telephone. The video was clearly all Gaga, although Beyonce added a slight bit of normalcy to an otherwise bizarre shoot. Needless to say the short music film caught the eyes of both critics and fans alike, most of whom were not the least bit surprised with the end result.

Lady Gaga’s rise to fame seemed to happen within the blink of an eye. One moment she was performing burlesque shows at small nightclubs throughout New York City and the next she was attending the Grammy Awards with Kermit the Frog. Gaga achieved her first big hit song with “Just Dance,” released in 2008, the precursor to the follow-up album The Fame. The tracks were routinely played in clubs around the world and ultimately “Just Dance” scored the top spot on the Billboard charts. Other songs off of the record also become popular singles, most notably “Poker Face” and “Paparazzi.”

Gaga’s follow-up album The Fame Monster arrived in November 2009, led by the single “Bad Romance.” Once again, the ballad reached the top of the Billboard charts in a short amount of time and became her fifth consecutive Top 10 single.

It’s hard to argue with Gaga’s popularity; she has taken the music world by storm with her unique style in what she calls “performance art.” Lady Gaga always has plenty of surprises in store for her devoted fans. New release album

After a long hiatus, Canadian collective Broken Social Scene is releasing its fourth album, Forgiveness Rock Record, on May 4 (May 3 across the pond in the U.K). Now Pitchfork reports that Broken Social Scene is making it worth their fans’ wait by also releasing a bonus EP for those who pre-order Forgiveness Rock Record. Titled Lo-Fi for the Diving Nights, the 10-track offering (lengthy to be considered an EP) was recorded while the band was in Chicago recording their forthcoming LP. “During downtime the band members would head into Soma’s second smaller studio to test out new ideas and overdubs while John McEntire worked in the main room,” says a post on BSS’s official website.

Forgiveness Rock Record is the follow-up to Broken Social Scene’s eponymous 2005 album. Due to the collective’s open-door policy, the album was written and arranged by a six-piece comprised of singer-guitarist Kevin Drew, singer-bassist Brendan Canning, drummer Justin Peroff, guitarist Charles Spearin, singer-guitarist Andrew Whiteman and relative newcomer guitarist Sam Goldberg. Forgiveness Rock Record features production by another newcomer, post-rock icon John McEntire (who is also a member of Tortoise and the Sea and Cake). Pavement’s Spiral Stairs, Tortoise’s Doug McCombs, Sea and Cake’s Sam Prekop, former Death From Above 1979 singer-drummer Sebastian Grainger, Helen Money’s Alison Chesley, Poi Dog Pondering’s Susan Voelz and the Weakerthans’ Jason Tait also appear on the record in some capacity, according to Pitchfork.

In July, Broken Social Scene will travel to Chicago to perform in the Windy City’s Union Park on July 16, 17 and 18. Pitchfork is celebrating its fifth year of the music festival with an impressive lineup featuring Modest Mouse, LCD Soundsystem, Pavement, Big Boi, Beach House, Local Natives, Girls and more. BSS will perform on the first day of the 2010 edition of the Pitchfork Music Festival, which is quickly giving major festivals like Coachella, Bonnaroo and Sasquatch some competition!

Broken Social Scene will also be on hand for the inaugural Hopscotch Festival, held in Raleigh, N.C. at various venues scattered across the city between Sept. 9 and 10. Also among the 120 artists on the bill are Lucero, the Golden Filter, Animal Collective’s Panda Bear, Tortoise, Public Enemy, Washed Out, No Age and others.

Nashville, Tenn. may be the capital of country music, but Rascal Flatts escaped the long winter in the southern state to record their new album in sunny Santa Barbara, Calif. Guitarist Joe Don Rooney, one-third of the country trio, told Nashville’s Tennessean newspaper, “It relaxed us. We didn’t have the hustle and bustle of going back home from the studio and being in Nashville in the crazy traffic. We were pretty close to the studio in Santa Barbara and we got to spend 14 to 16 hours a day in the studio … It was a really cool experience!”

Even though Rascal Flatts returned to Nashville refreshed and relaxed, the group was still shocked by the recent announcement made by Disney that the band’s longtime label, Lyric Street, was folding. Lead singer Gary LeVox admitted to The Boot, “It just blindsides us. It was out of the blue. It’s still a little shocking. That was our family for 12 years. It’s just a sad deal.” Disney has yet to make a public announcement about where the country trio will now reside, although they will remain under the Disney umbrella as they prepare for the release of their new album.

LeVox assured fans via The Boot, “We’re still moving full steam ahead and we’re just pumped about the new stuff that we’re cutting.” The lead single off Rascal Flatts’ as-yet-untitled new album is set to arrive this June, the same month in which the group will embark on their Nothing Like This Tour. Rascal Flatts will kick off their tour in Raleigh, N.C. on June 25 and bring opening acts Kellie Pickler and Chris Young with them along for the ride, which wraps up in Boston on Sept. 19.

New release album

While the departure of lead vocalist/guitarist Steven Page shocked fans in and outside of the Barenaked Ladies’ native Canada, the quirky pop-rock act is simply looking ahead. The Barenaked Ladies have suffered their fair share of turmoil in recent years, which is why fans were happy to see the band performing during the festivities surrounding the recent Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The Barenaked Ladies have a new album on the shelves—All in Good Time arrived March 23 in Canada and March 30 in the States—and are embarking on a tour in support of the album in April, reports Billboard.com.

Ed Robertson has stepped up to the plate in the wake of Page’s February 2009 departure, taking the reins as lead vocalist, and recently told Billboard.com, “It is absolutely a rebirth and reinvention of the band. It was something we’d worked hard at for 20 years—I wasn’t going to let it die away.” Page was arrested for cocaine possession in 2008, just before the Barenaked Ladies released their kids’ album, Snacktime!—awkward circumstances, to say the least. Snacktime! Has sold 111,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielson SoundScan.

Although many fans feared the Barenaked Ladies would wave the white flag after Page’s exit from the lineup, Robertson took the helm for the band’s new album, composing and laying down vocals for nine of the 14 tracks on All in Good Time. While Tyler Stewart remains glued to his drum set, the Barenaked Ladies’ multi-instrumentalist Kevin Hearn and bassist Jim Creegan even wrote and sang on some songs on the album. Billboard.com hails “Another Heartbreak” and lead single “You Run Away” standouts off the album, also saying that while the remaining members of the Barenaked Ladies may be candid about Page’s departure, “musically at least, the band doesn’t seem to be missing him at all.”

The Barenaked Ladies have undergone more internal changes lately, as they parted ways with Nettwerk Music Group CEO/manager Terry McBride in July 2009. McBride was the leading force behind the band’s 1998 fourth album Stunt, which managed to sell a whopping 3.6 million albums thanks to hit singles like the infectious “One Week.” The Barenaked Ladies signed with Cam 8′s Jordan Feldstein after splitting with McBride due to what Robertson described to Billboard.com as Feldstein’s “comprehensive vision for the band.”

Speaking about the Barenaked Ladies’ upcoming tour, Robertson told Billboard.com, “We’re promoting this album with a lot more concentration than we have in quite a while. We’re doing it because we’re really excited about the songs we’ve written and it’s fun for us to see people rooting us on.” The band’s tour begins in their native Canada at the Save-On Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria, British Columbia on April 6 and the Barenaked Ladies begin shows in the U.S. at Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City on May 8.

New release DVD

All Right! Who’s up for a night of movies, buttered popcorn, your favorite candy and ice cold slushies? A show of hands please. Yeah, just what I thought, pretty much everyone is. I doubt we will ever get tired of America’s greatest national treasure, watching new released movies. Whether it’s in the comfort of our own homes, or in the local movie theater, we are in love with watching movies. But wait a minute! As with most good things, there is a bad side or two. Have you ever noticed that most of the movie review guys are over-weight? What do you think you would look like if you went to every new release movie and ate all of that buttery popcorn and calorie laden candy? Can you say Big Fat Fatty? I guess a good Hollywood film is worth a little fat.

The thing that really aggravates me is the way Hollywood is spitting out all of those movie remakes and stamping them as new released movies. Can anyone tell me why are all the new released movies are re-makes of old flicks, TV shows, cartoon characters or comic book heroes? Come to think of it, how many comic book heroes are there anyway? Can’t anyone use their imagination anymore? This is really starting to bother me. I have to go see how many comic book super hero new released movies?

I probably shouldn’t complain so much. After all, one of my favorite movies is Robin Hood with Errol Flynn and all though it is considered a movie classic, it was just another new released movie remake. Another good new released movie I went to see was Peter Jackson’s re-make of the film “King Kong.” OK, I’ll admit it. There are some good movie remakes out there but the reason this film was good was Peter Jackson who just finished making the critically acclaimed and Academy Award winning “Lord Of The Rings” trilogy was completely obsessed with remaking “King Kong”, and although he used all of today’s special effects technology to help him pull it off; it was the fact that he pretty much stuck to the plot combined with good acting that made this a successful new released movie. It took a really good director to make it again and show what it truly could be using today’s technology.

Alright, just because I just mentioned a couple of good remakes and I’m sure there are more, doesn’t get all the other poorly made new released movies off the hook. Someone please tell me, why in the world did they re-make “The Omen”? In my opinion the original Omen was fantastic. The movie wasn’t that old, they really couldn’t improve on the special effects and the lead actor was Gregory Peck, need I say more. There are times when some thing is done so well it just can not be improved upon, and this was one of them. When a movie is that good, why can’t they just re-release the original movie as a new released movie, why do they have to remake it?

For some reason they remake horror films more than any other genre. And I understand that with today’s superior special effects the temptation is just too strong not to want to remake everyone’s favorite scary movies. But, guess what Hollywood? The reason most people go to see a new released horror or hack and slash movie is the suspense, the unknown. Guess what? When you remake a horror or hack and slash movie, the suspense is gone, the unknown is known. Use your collective imaginations and make a completely original new released movie so we can start using our imaginations once again. I have actually heard remakes called “re-imaginations” and that’s a sad thing. So please stop taking the “thrill” out of the thriller.

Listen, I think I have a solution to this whole new released movies and movie remake problem. I understand that you are releasing more new movies than ever and that they are being shown in the movie theatres for less time than ever so they can be re-released as DVD’s for sale or rent in places like Blockbuster and Hollywood Movies or sold as PPV to cable networks. I understand it’s all about the money, but why not remake movies that didn’t fare so well when they were new released movies. Take those movies that have a decent plot but because the producers didn’t have a very big budget or the director sucked or the actors couldn’t act and do whatever it takes to make them good movies that we will enjoy watching, slap a new title on them and put them in theatres as new released movies. Sounds like a money making plan to me. Before I end this, I was thinking of doing a remake of this article instead of writing a new one. What do you think? Let me know. Jack Johnson’s newest album will be called To the Sea, and it seems an appropriate title for this mellow musician, who’s responsible for tunes like “Bubble Toes,” “All at Once” and “Taylor.” The album is not expected to land in stores until June, but fans are already celebrating its arrival and are especially looking forward to the single, “You and Your Heart,” which will precede the record itself.

Reaching out to his fans, Johnson will embark on a 32-city tour, scheduled to kick off on July 9 in Hartford, Conn. and continue through mid-October, with final shows taking place in Santa Barbara, Calif. To the Sea follows Johnson’s previous studio release, Sleep through the Static, which earned a number one spot on the Billboard charts. The release of Brushfire Fairytales in 2001 put him on the map and ultimately the effort went platinum, thanks to the inclusion of such standout tracks like “Flake,” “Bubble Toes” and “It’s All Understood.” The peaceful, mellow-minded tunes were appealing not only to Johnson’s surfer community but also to a much broader fan base, as well. Sorry, Dead Weather fans. Although the Jack White-fronted band has revealed the title of its upcoming new album-Sea Of Cowards-it has yet to get an official release date. According to CHARTattack, the Dead Weather recently updated their website to say that their sophomore album was “coming soon.”

Several music websites hint that he Dead Weather’s follow-up to last year’s Horehound will arrive this May, so stay tuned. To tide fans over until Sea of Cowards arrives, Jack White released a box set of his other band, the White Stripes, on tour. Titled Under Great White Northern Lights, the box set chronicles White and his original band on their 2007 Canadian tour.

Although Jack White has placed the White Stripes and his other group the Raconteurs on hold while focusing on the Dead Weather full time, the busy rock musician recently told the British version of GQ magazine that he has been experimenting with hip-hop lately. “I just did a record with Jay-Z. We did a song together a few weeks ago,” said White before gushing, “It was incredible. I played him something that I’ve been kicking around for a while and he immediately came out with the words for it. It’s unbelievable-sounding.” White didn’t reveal when his hip-hop collaboration with Jay-Z will be released in the pages of GQ.

Although the Dead Weather is separate from White’s other bands, he didn’t stray too far and recruited members of the White Stripes and the Raconteurs as well as former touring mates the Kills to make up the lineup. The Kills were opening for the Raconteurs when the two bands engaged in an impromptu jam session that eventually resulted in a side project.

The Dead Weather features White on drums, the Kills’ singer Alison Mosshart on vocals, Raconteur Jack Lawrence on bass and Queens of the Stone Age member and Raconteurs touring musician Dean Fertita on guitar. After initially recording four songs, the newly minted band decided to keep on going and the resulting Horehound arrives on July 14, 2009 via White’s Third Man Records.

Although currently on tour in New Zealand and Australia, the Dead Weather will return to the States in April. A few festival dates are sprinkled among the Dead Weather’s upcoming concerts, with Jack White & Co. performing at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival (in Indio, Cali. on April 17), New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (on May 2) and Bonnaroo (in Manchester, Tenn. on June 12).

On Feb. 12, the Dead Weather took to their official website to reveal that the Ettes will support the band on their upcoming tour. New York transplants based in Los Angeles, the Ettes is comprised of Lindsay “Coco” Hames on vocals/guitar, Maria “Poni” Silver on drums and Jeremy “Jem” Cohen on bass. The Ettes formed in 2004 and quickly garnered buzz in the rock community due to their unique sound, which some have hailed as a cross between the Rolling Stones, Nancy Sinatra and Patsy Cline. Hey, if Jack White gives the group his stamp of approval, everyone else will be quick to follow!

Peter Gabriel has always been an iconoclast. The musical man of many talents started with the prog-rockers Genesis, bringing an outlandish fashion sense and colorful concepts to the stage with them. On his own, his solo career was highly productive, and the first half of the ’80s was undoubtedly one of his most successful periods, both commercially and critically. Critics loved him for his experimental nature, while even teens started discovering him through songs like “In Your Eyes” and “Sledgehammer,” the former of which was featured in Say Anything while the latter had a memorable music video on MTV.

More recently, Gabriel’s public image has receded as he’s produced less, focused more on philanthropic efforts and generally played it low-key. That changed last year when he announced his Scratch My Back project, where he released a covers record with tributes to some of his favorite artists. The idea was that after hearing their songs covered these other artists would “scratch” Gabriel’s back by recording a cover of one of his songs.

It’s a fabulous concept, but sadly, Gabriel has had trouble getting all the covers done. Not the covers of his favorite artists—those are done and available on his newest album, Scratch My Back – but the covers of his songs haven’t yet materialized. Though all the artists he covered agreed to the project (excluding, surprisingly enough, David Bowie), the deadlines for other artists’ covers came and went. Now, Gabriel is stuck waiting for the covers to all come in before he can release them. He told the New York Times in early March that he originally hoped to release both records in tandem so that people could enjoy the full scope of the project. It looks as if when it happens, if it happens, those songs might have to be released online and trickle out to listeners.

It’s really a shame, especially considering the talent that’s involved. David Bowie is out, but Brian Eno, a longtime friend of Gabriel’s, is in. Lou Reed, Paul Simon and Neil Young all agreed to the project as well, which makes sense as they were all really from Gabriel’s era of music. But the true delight in the back-scratching project is seeing so many younger bands participating, including the Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Regina Spektor and the Magnetic Fields.

These are all artists that undoubtedly were inspired by Gabriel’s music when they were younger, and the chance to work with the musician today has got to be exhilarating. Not that that means much for fans—they’re still waiting to hear those Gabriel covers.

It looks like they’ll have to keep waiting. Gabriel has a lot to offer fans in terms of his own covers, however, so rock fans can check out his covers and hope that some new material is on the way, as well. Two bands just weren’t enough for White Stripes frontman Jack White, and his newest-assembled rock group the Dead Weather is proving that perhaps the musician has saved the best for last. The Dead Weather, a force on the rock scene since forming in 2009, has just announced the release of the band’s sophomore set dubbed Sea of Cowards, and the date to circle on calendars is May 11, which is when it will be available to the public.

Quickly following the Dead Weather’s debut album Horehound in 2009, Sea of Cowards is projected to be an even bigger release, already swirling around the music scene with the album’s first single, “Die by the Drop.” The single was unleashed to the public on March 30 and the music video quickly followed suit, released via iTunes on April 6. The rest of the release will drop in mid-May.

Along with a fresh album to mark the Dead Weather’s place on the mainstream rock scene, the Nashville-based amalgam of already-famous artists will also play a string of live shows throughout the spring months, including a sprinkling of gigs at music festivals including Coachella, Bonnaroo and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” rel=”external nofollow” target=”_blank” href=”http://www.stubhub.com/the-dead-weather-tickets/”>The Dead Weather tickets</a> are available for several other shows this year, as well, making Jack White’s newest endeavor a bona fide success.

The Dead Weather has been causing a musical ruckus on the mainstream scene since 2009, when the band formed as a merger between members of White’s other bands as well as members of the Kills, who the Raconteurs (White’s other band) had been touring with the year before. Recording music together came naturally for the newfound Dead Weather, and the electrifying chemistry between band members led to the quick release of Horehound, the band’s debut full-length set. Fueled by the singles “60 Feet Tall” and “Hang You from the Heavens,” Horehound quickly established the Dead Weather as a threat on the alternative rock scene.

While Jack White continues to play in his assortment of other music groups, his hand in the Dead Weather has also helped the rockers come up with Sea of Cowards, the band’s forthcoming release. For such a group that functions on the fly, the Dead Weather has made some monumental music over the last two years, satiating Jack White fans’ cravings for new tunes. When the band started in 2009, expectations for the crew were kept mum, with White revealing only the following about plans for 2010 in a November 2009 interview with Rolling Stone: “We’ll probably be having a new album by that time, if we’re lucky… We can’t tell you much about [a new album] except that it’s gonna be really expansive, and I use that word loosely in a scientific sense, meaning that I’m just using it to distract you.”

Now putting more concrete plans into place, the Dead Weather will continue roaming the nation on tour dates this spring while moving forward with a new album. Released last month, Love, the new album by rock band Angels and Airwaves, seems to be a slight departure from the punk-rock style of Tom DeLonge. The blink-182 band member has embraced a “space theme” for new tracks via his latest musical endeavor.

Other notable tracks featured on Angels and Airwaves’ latest album Love include “Young London” and “Moon-Atomic.” One ballad in particular, “Soul Survivor (…2012)” takes fans on an imaginative adventure about the end of the world. Universitychronicle.com notes that, “Somehow, with their uplifting lyrics [they] could make someone forget they were about to be extinct.” The same article also notes that this new sound works for the band, noting their focus on “love and appreciation of multiple aspects of life.”

Angels and Airwaves are gearing up for a spring tour alongside Say Anything starting on April 5 in San Francisco. They will be visiting 39 cities including Kansas City, Cleveland, Chicago, Detroit, Rochester, Portland and Seattle, among others.

Once blink-182 declared a hiatus from recording and performing, singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge ventured out and formed his new musical project, Angels and Airwaves. The group made its official live debut at Glass House in Pomona, Calif. Their first album, We Don’t Need to Whisper, gave fans a taste of what to expect from the newly formed group, with songs like “The Adventure,” “The War” and “The Gift.” The lyrics were highly passionate and reflected dreamlike content and an emphasis on the universe.

Angels and Airwaves then released I-Empire which, although not quite as popular as their first effort, spurred a U.S. tour with festival performances on the Warped Tour. The album featured the singles “Call to Arms,” “Everything’s Magic” and “True Love.” They further built upon the themes of the universe and space on this release, garnering more attention for DeLonge and Angels and Airwaves.

Love, their latest, was aptly titled for its release on Valentine’s Day. It was released free of charge and contains 11 tracks. DeLonge noted on his website that the album features a progressive rock sound: “Things happen unpredictably and take you to these epic soundscapes. It’s very much in the spirit of Angels & Airwaves, but it sounds way, way more thought-out and way more ambitious.”

Last year Tom DeLonge joined fellow blink-182 members (Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker) on the stage to announce a reunion tour, which they conducted through last year. They also spent time in the studio recording a new album. Between that and the new material from Angels and Airwaves, DeLonge has managed to keep busy.
