Qwerty keyboard.

The keypad on traditional mobile phones is small. As a result, text input is cumbersome and slow. It is also very difficult to key in commands or type text messages quickly. With the in-built Qwerty keyboard, the user can now input whatever they want into the gadget in just seconds.

Touch screen display.

Mounted on AT&T’s own high speed 3G HSDPA networks, the Quickfire phone is able to download data at great speeds. This is the backbone of the Quickfire mobile phone. Without a high speed connection, other features would be useless.

Music and video content download.

Using the Quickfire phone, users can download music directly from Napster mobile or eMusic mobile. Video content can also be downloaded from HBO mobile or ESPN. Such downloads are only possible with a high speed connection.

AT&T navigator.

The AT&T navigator is a useful feature, and is an alternative to GPS navigation systems. This feature provides useful information on traffic as well as directions. Directions can be provided by voice, so there is no need to hold on to the gadget while traveling. Maps and directions will be prominently displayed in graphical representations on the screen.

Physical appearance.

The Quickfire mobile phone comes in a shiny silver casing. At first glance, it looks very much like an ordinary smartphone. However, the screen can slide away, revealing a Qwerty keyboard in its interior.

Overall, the Quickfire phone looks simple and lightweight. It is not loaded with hefty features. Even the in-built camera is a lightweight one, offering just 1.3 megapixels. This makes the phone just good enough to take casual pictures, and it’s definitely not ready to replace a full featured digital camera.

However, it is rather amazing to see the number of features that have been packed into this mobile gadget. Traditionally, mobile phones can only be used for simple text messaging and viewing pictures or videos on a tiny screen. With the Quickfire phone, all that is about to change. Users can now use the phone to type and send lengthy text messages, download music, and enjoy full length videos on a much larger screen.

This looks like a gadget that will be most suitable for business executives who may need some basic communication features, but are not ready to fork out a hefty price for higher end gadgets. It even comes free if you are buying with a new service plan!

Ever since broadband was set up and made readily available to the general public, illegal music downloads have gone through the roof. Today, approximately 95% of all downloads are illegal and some 6.5m broadband users illegally download music on a daily basis.

Earlier this year, the music industry decided that enough was enough and that this multi million pound purge needed to stop. Discussions with John Hutton (The Business Secretary), Andy Burnham (The Culture Secretary) and major internet service providers (ISPs) resulted in tough new proposals governing the illegal download scene.

At this point, it is perhaps worth outlining the law when it comes to downloading music. The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (CDPA) is the current UK copyright law and gives the creators of literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works the right to control the ways in which their material may be used. These rights cover broadcast and public performance, copying, adapting, issuing, renting and lending copies to the public. By downloading music files illegally, you are in breech of the copying part of this law.

ISPs have been pressurised into clamping down on persistent illegal downloaders and in June of this year, Virgin Broadband (one of the largest ISPs in the UK) agreed to take steps towards culling downloads. Virgin expect to send out more than 12,000 letters over the course of the summer to internet users warning them to stop their illegal downloads or face restrictions on their service.

So what does this mean for internet downloaders? Well, Virgin are keen not to punish their users, they would rather ‘educate’ them on the wrongs of downloading illegally. Sounds like a cop out and a good way round enforcing the law, but they might not have much choice on this in a year’s time.

Huttin and Burnham, along with bosses from the music industry want tighter rules surrounding illegal downloads. One of the proposals includes placing a 30 GBP annual charge on people who want to download files. This would give users unlimited access to download files from anywhere on the net, without the worry of facing up to law. 30 GBP may not sound a lot, but as Peter Jenner stated; “If you get enough people paying a small amount of money you can turn around the wheels of the music industry.” The funds from these fees are worth almost 1.2bn GBP and would be channelled back to the industry and distributed proportionally back to the relative rights holders.

Obviously looking for the toughest penalties for repeat offenders, industry bosses are calling for a ‘three strikes and you’re out’ policy, similar to the scheme currently employed in France. Persistent offenders would be warned and banned if they didn’t stop. Other proposals include preventative filters which stop the possibility of any illegal download activity or, illegal downloaders’ details being given directly to the music industry for punishment.

Sites like Napster brought illegal downloads to the masses and were relatively untouched by officials for many years until they realised just how much impact illegal downloads were having on the music industry. In 2001, the company were forced to shut down after being found guilty of copyright infringement laws.

Today, Napster is a legitimate trading company and sells downloads instead of offering them for free. iTunes are the biggest players in this market and dominate the scene with a 70% share of legal music downloads. It took less than five years to reach 1bn downloads, and keen to show that legal downloads are the way forward, the company rewarded the downloader, Alex Ostrovsky, with a brand new iMac, ten iPods and a 10,000 USD (5,700 GBP) iTunes voucher. Not a bad return on his 99p investment.

In 2006, the download market really came up trumps when Gnarles Berkley had a hit with Crazy. The song hadn’t even been released on CD when it hit the top spot in the UK charts after Zane Lowe championed the song on his New Music Show.

So will pressure from the industry actually have any effect on downloads? ISPs have already cleared themselves of any wrong doing as they are merely ‘conduits’ of information – they don’t personally hold the files.

Illegal downloads will inevitably continue as new methods of file sharing are discovered and employed. At the end of the day, rules are there to be broken and problems are there to be solved. As long as CDs cost as much as they do, downloaders will see no reason to stop what they are doing. If a CD costs less than 1GBP to produce, the question remains: Why are we charged the earth to purchase them?

Experience has shown that ‘free’ products have often backfired as a marketing strategy. Take for example ‘Linux’ a free windows alternative. No one’s buying it, and perhaps it’s because no one has to pay for it. The accepted thinking is that people don’t trust anymore, its too good to be true – if they’re giving it away there must be a catch. This might not always be the case – perhaps if  the music industry was run by the ‘Amish’ it might have a little more credibility, a lot less excitement, but we’d trust it.

There’s an old story about an island where the streets are littered with diamonds. At first the new visitor scrambles to fill his pockets with them, but pretty soon realizes that here on this island, they have nomore value than common stones – simply because they are available, plentiful and free.

There’s another reason we might lose interest in free music – respect. We used to look up to the artists, Dylan, Lennon, Neil young. These guys were real – no bull. If nothing else, at least the music was true and buying the album was like being a part of it, supporting the often anti-establishment cause in some way.

When Radiohead released their last album ‘In Rainbows’ for free, they asked their fans to donate money if they wanted to which was a great marketing strategy.  People don’t want  to throw their money but they do want to support a cause and it’s the music and artist that represent that cause. We are happy to pay if we believe in the message and the product. But what if the artist sells out -can we still believe in the message?

Now we all know that no ones going hungry over the abundance of available online free music, but where the money coming from? The advertising industry.The artists have sold out to the advertising companies, to the same establishment it was raised to protest against(at least in the marketing). That may be nothing new but now they’ve dropped all pretence. Now they’re just selling ad space.

It’s the final stake in the heart for the music industry. The revolutions come full circle and eaten itself from behind. How is this going to effect the music, just turn on your radio (if you’ve still got one). The demise of radio was not caused by video, but by the fact that music just turned bad, it lost its credibility. We just couldn’t buy it anymore.

Now I’m no pessimist, in fact I think it’s a good thing. The music’s been dying a slow death for years, its time to relegate the last fifty years of music to history – Its time for something new. And it will come – it always does – the new thing. Something that will rock the boat again.and shake the industry out of its slumber. It won’t come through music owned by add companies and multinationals but from some ADD kid in a suburban garage.

And when you hear it you’ll know and you’ll be running to spend your thirty dollars. In the meantime you might as well grab some free music because after all, we all sell out sometime.

Down, very talented Rock group have released their latest CD titled II and Wow! It’s really a good one.

Unfortunately, it’s not everyday that I get a CD for review that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with II. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

These days it’s a very rare CD on which every single song is good or better than the one before it. This CD is certainly one of those rare CDs.

Listen to II and I believe you’ll find there’s not much to dis-like about it. The songs are inspired, the production is simply outstanding, and this is clearly the work of a group of musicians in top form. So much so that if you’re even mildly into Rock music you’ll enjoy this CD.

While this entire CD is outstanding the truly standout tunes are track 2 – There’s Something On My Side, track 5 – Ghosts Along The Mississippi, and track 15 – Landing On The Mountains Of Meggido.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 – Lysergik Funeral Procession. Good stuff!

Not sure what’s happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better Right Now gets. Right Now simply put is one of Jackie McLean’s best CDs to date.

It’s a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I’m more than happy to announce that’s exactly what I must say about this one. There simply is NOT a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all, with each song standing tall on it’s own.

One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and you’ve got one of Jackie McLean’s most impressive releases ever.

If you’re a Jackie McLean fan this is a CD your collection flat cannot be without. In fact, this is one of those CDs that you don’t even have to be a fan of McLean, or even Rock to know is good. This is just good music. Period.

While the entire CD is really very good some of my favorites are track 2 – Poor Eric, track 3 – Christel’s Time, and track 5 – Right Now

No matter what you associate musically with Halloween, the songs and themes that seem to pop up year after year around October 31st have certainly made an impact. Unlike Christmas Music, which has a rich tradition (aside from the deplorable “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer”), Halloween music is almost exclusively a product of the 20th century.

The number of purely musical releases are few and far between. Most recognizable Halloween themes were a byproduct from the film and television industry. Consider Ray Parker Jr’s “Ghostbusters”, which was originally titled “I Want a New Drug” and performed by Huey Lewis and the News. It not only rose to the top of the charts, but has also enjoyed many subsequent years of airplay because of the Halloween season, much to the chagrin of anyone who can’t appreciate the beauty of rhyming “dose” with “ghost”.

Even more popular are the sound bites from various horror franchises. Who can forget the busy yet astonishingly creepy theme to John Carpenter’s “Halloween” or the scary, slow building strings that John Williams wrote for Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws”? And dare we not include Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” from the movie Titanic. Talk about frightening!

Indeed, movie and TV themes such as “The Twilight Zone”, written and performed by Neil Norman & His Cosmic Orchestra, seem to resonate with more appeal than novelty songs written with monster mayhem in mind. Personally, I blame the song “The Blob” which was written and performed by the ingeniously named The Five Blobs for setting a terrible precedence. It’s not easy to adequately convey the urgent need to “be careful of the blob” with monotone vocals and music that sounds fresh from an Annette Funicello, Franky Avalon surf picture, but somehow all five blobs managed.

No matter what music puts you in the mood for frightening fun this Halloween season, it’s almost a given that you’ll hear it somewhere. Whether it comes from the television, the radio, or via the humming of that co-worker in the cubical next to your who you never were all that sure about, Halloween music is indeed here to stay.

Where can I find a list of new release music singles?
Anyone know is there a website that lists the upcoming or newly released music singles from mainstream artists? I know of billboard.com, but that list is already for established singles that have been released. It seems the only way i can find out new singles as they are released is if there is an article written about it on mtv.com. Someone help me out?
